After Retinol and PDRN, K-Beauty's Next Volume Trick: Volufiline
A new ingredient is spreading fast through K-beauty formulas as a needle-free alternative to filler. Here's what Volufiline is, why brands are stacking it with retinol and PDRN, and what it means for wholesale buyers.
Retinol had its moment. PDRN followed. Now the ingredient K-beauty brands are racing to formulate around is Volufiline — a patented active that's being marketed as a "wearable filler" for hollow under-eyes, temples and nasolabial folds.
Volufiline is a specialty ingredient from French supplier Sederma, extracted from mung bean root. Unlike retinol or PDRN, which work by signaling skin cells to repair and regenerate over time, Volufiline targets adipocytes — the fat cells just beneath the skin — encouraging them to store lipids and plump back up. The result buyers are being pitched: a physical, visible fill in hollowed areas, without a needle.
Why it's spreading through K-beauty so fast
Global direct-purchase platforms and beauty social media have picked up on Volufiline over the past few weeks, and Korean brands have moved quickly to formulate with it. Medicube added it to a new retinal volume booster (0.15% retinal plus 5% Volufiline, positioned as simultaneous wrinkle-and-volume care). d'Alba paired it with white truffle in an intensive grinding cream. Several other brands — Abib among them — are working Volufiline into their own eye-area and firming lines.
The appeal to consumers is straightforward: filler and Botox both carry cost, downtime and a needle that a large share of global shoppers would rather avoid. A cream that promises a comparable visual effect, applied at home, is an easy sell — especially bundled with the retinol and PDRN actives that already built consumer trust over the past two cycles.
A pattern worth watching, not just one ingredient
What's notable for wholesale buyers isn't Volufiline in isolation — it's the formulation pattern. K-beauty brands are increasingly stacking mechanisms rather than betting on a single hero ingredient: PDRN for cellular repair, Volufiline for physical volume, retinol for turnover, all combined into one "hybrid filler" product. That combination approach is what's letting brands clear the bar international consumers now expect from a skincare claim.
For buyers sourcing skincare, it's a signal to watch new SKUs from your Korean suppliers for combination actives rather than single-ingredient formulas — that's where the current demand is concentrating, and where the next wave of reorder-worthy products is likely to come from.
Abib, already available through KGW's Pre-Order catalogue, is one of the brands moving in this direction. If you're evaluating which new SKUs to bring into your next order, it's worth flagging to your account contact.
